Dream House

A house is a common dream symbol. It can symbolize your emotional or psychological self or center.

All of your experiences, stages of development, and parts of your conscious and unconscious life may be represented by that house.

The different rooms of your dream house can be associated with different memories and emotions. For example, a kitchen in a dream can represent feelings of being nurtured, a living room can represent memories of family life and a bedroom may be associated with sexual thoughts or with times when you felt relaxed and comfortable. A bathroom in a dream can be a place where you wash away negative or “dirty” thoughts.

Do not be surprised if the house that you encounter in your dream is nothing like any house you have seen in your waking life. This is because it is a symbol of your unconscious, which is largely unknown to your waking mind.  It is common to have recurring dreams of returning to the same house, which does not exist in waking life.  This is a way for you to explore your unconscious thoughts, night after night.

If the house in your dreams is one that is familiar to you in waking life, think about the memories that you associate with it. A dream about being in your childhood home can have to do with facing unresolved conflicts that began in childhood, or it can be about the desire to return to a time of childhood innocence.

A dream that you are in the home of someone you know in waking life can mean that you are seeking the qualities that you associate with that person. For example, if you find yourself in the home of a generous friend or relative, you may feel deprived and in need of others’ generosity, or you may need to behave more generously yourself.  Being in the home of someone with a great sense of humor can mean that you need to add more joy and laughter to your life.

A particular room in a dream can also be associated with a specific memory.  For example, if you learned of bad news when you were in your bedroom, a bedroom in a dream can have very negative connotations for you.
