During REM sleep, your large muscles are paralyzed. Scientists studying sleeping rats have found that the brain emits large quantities of the neurotransmitters glycine and GABA during REM sleep, and this deactivate the nerves cells that cause muscles to move. They were able to prevent the paralysis by blocking both glycine and GABA.
